Teaching & Learning

At Ashtree Primary School we follow the new National Curriculum 2014, this has been used to develop the design of our curriculum to focus on ‘what’ we want Ashtree pupils to learn, ‘how’ we want Ashtree pupils to learn and ‘why’ we want Ashtree pupils to learn through our curriculum.

Our curriculum delivers a cumulative sequence of knowledge and skills, building upon prior knowledge from the previous term and year. We value robust assessment for learning, identifying children’s gaps in their learning. Our curriculum is then adapted so all pupils can progress and to ensure these are targeted and the building blocks for future learning are secured.

The National Curriculum is also divided into Key Stages: Early Years Foundation Stage refers to pupils from birth to Reception, Key Stage 1 refers to pupils in Years 1 & 2, age-range (5 – 7 yrs), while Key Stage 2 refers to the Years 3 – 6, age-range (7 – 11 yrs).

At Ashtree Primary Academy we know how important excellent teaching is. This is why we work hard to select and to retain the best teachers and teaching assistants, and why we all devote considerable time each week to developing our own practice. In addition, our children benefit from specialist teaching in some subjects, such as PE, music and MFL, where we judge this helps them to make the best possible progress.

If you wish to learn more about what your child is learning, please do speak to their class teacher. To find out more about our curriculum, please speak to Mrs Janes (who can be contacted via the school office). Parents have the right to withdraw their children from all or part of Religious Education; please speak to Mrs Janes if you wish to do so or to discuss this further.
